WHAT ARE MALA BEADS?
Mala beads are a set of 108 beads that have traditionally been used to accompany a Japa Mantra practice. This is a beautiful way of keeping track of how many times you repeat a chosen mantra. Japa is a Sanskrit word that means "to repeat in a low voice or a whisper". In addition to the 108, there is a muru, or mountain bead, that is said to hold the intention and energy of your practice. The mala is traditionally held in the right hand, resting on the middle finger. Starting with the bead right next to your meru, you can use your thumb to pull each bead towards you, whispering your heartfelt mantra or intention as you go along at your own pace. A mantra is a word, sound, or phrase repeated to aid in freeing your mind. It can be as simple and as powerful as “I am love” or “Aham Prema” in Sanskrit. When you reach your meru bead once again, you can switch directions and go another round until your beautiful heart is content.
You don't have to be religious or have an attachment to any spiritual practice to wear and feel the benefits of these pieces. You can simply wear them as a reminder of all treasures that resides within YOU!
